Lansley says ‘No’ to Cambridge
Wind Farm proposals
At a meeting on Tuesday 27th
July with representatives of several villages in the vicinity of
the proposed ‘Cambridge Wind Farm’, Andrew Lansley, CBE, MP
for South Cambridgeshire, told them of his opposition to the
proposals.
Mr Lansley said : "The Cambridge Wind
Farm proposal would severely impact on the landscape and
environment of villages, including Boxworth, Conington, Fen
Drayton and Swavesey, and is not justified by wider energy policy
needs."
He continued : "The
scale of this proposal – sixteen 100-metre turbines, occupying
several hundred acres, would take a major part of the open
countryside in the Cambridge area, when we are already losing so
much to development which has to be in our area. The impact of
these turbines on the landscape would be dramatic, given the open
nature of our countryside. Impacts associated with noise,
especially low-frequency noise, are as yet undetermined.
"This is clearly an inappropriate location for such
development, and it is not necessary in my view to build a wind
farm in our increasingly crowded local environment. The Danes are
shifting from on-shore to offshore wind farms. As the Government’s
Science and Technology Minister said, they are doing so "for
the good reason that offshore wind turbines can be larger, which
is more economical" (Lord Sainsbury of Turville, House of
Lords Debate, 3 February) "I support
Michael Howard’s announcement earlier this week that the
Conservatives will promote renewables with maximum long-term
benefit, including tidal/wave technology and offshore wind, while
avoiding onshore wind farms in sensitive locations. We will ensure
that decisions on wind farms are taken by local planning
authorities, not overridden by central government.
"I call on ‘Your Energy’, as promoters of the Cambridge
Wind Farm, to recognise these objections and not to proceed with
their proposal."
Notes to Editors :
Conservatives have called for a Government
re-think on wind farms, with local communities given more say over
the location of renewable energy turbines. "Ministers have
bet everything on land based wind farms in the belief that they
are the quickest and the cheapest way to meet the Government’s
renewable energy target. They are pressing ahead regardless of the
opportunities offered by other renewable energy sources;
regardless of the cost to the British landscape; and regardless of
the impact their policy will have on local people’s lives."
